The university's Judicial Board (UJB) issued sanctions to students that ranged from "multi-year suspensions, temporary degree revocation and expulsions", the school said in a statement on Thursday.

A campus-wide email sent indicated the university issued these sanctions against dozens of students, the BBC's US news partner CBS reported.

On March 7, the fascist rulers of the US cancelled $400m in grants & contracts with #ColumbiaUniversity.

On March 8, lawful permanent resident & green card holder Mahmoud Khalil was temporarily disappeared/ illegally detained by ICE for his lawful speech.

By March 14, #Columbia expelled students & revoked degrees for anti-genocide protesters & further ICE repression of speech occurred.

Columbia was a test case showing that supposedly-upstanding US institutions will bend the knee to #fascism.

Columbia FUBAR'd the Gaza protests by treating protesters like criminals and making them vulnerable to absolutely illegal detention (as we see in the Khalil case);

They prematurely aligned with law enforcement, so now they can't/ won't intervene when ICE/DHS oversteps.

They cooperated with that sham of a Senate hearing, and now they're getting their funding yanked, and the government wants to make them a propaganda arm.

Good job, #Columbia. You're fucked.

This piece quotes offensive statements made by other Gaza protestors but not a single word uttered by Khalil. And certainly no deeds.

A curious omission given her thesis that while his views are odious they’re nonetheless protected by the first amendment.

www.thebulwark.comMahmoud Khalil Has Rights, DammitI can’t defend what he said, but I defend his right to say it.
From the Harvard Crimson:
Over the last week, the Trump administration has cancelled $400 million in grants and contracts to Columbia University and $800 million in grants to Johns Hopkins University.

So far, America’s leading universities have remained virtually silent in the face of this authoritarian assault on institutions of higher education. That must change. Harvard must stand up, speak out, and lead a public defense of our freedom to speak and study freely.
Columbia made an attempt to pre-emptively please this administration, and they were still made to suffer. That's how this works. Laying low and/or cooperating does not help:
Not only is silence in the face of mounting authoritarianism morally objectionable, but, as the Columbia case suggests, it’s not working. Columbia’s leadership made repeated concessions to right-wing critics, only to be the first to come under attack.

www.thecrimson.comFirst They Came for Columbia | Opinion | The Harvard CrimsonWe must learn from the past. We cannot remain silent in the face of authoritarian attacks on our peers, even if they have not yet come for us.

Several years ago, there was a whole public debate in the US about whether or not the universities where Richard Spencer got his BA and MA should revoke those degrees. That discussion particularly focused on the University of Virginia, where he got his BA and where the Unite the Right tiki torch march took place, threatening and intimidating a number of then-current students on campus. This is also the same Richard Spencer who has repeatedly been recorded on video giving Nazi salutes, who was infamously caught on tape using all kinds of racist and antisemitic language while ranting about the failure of Unite the Right, and who told his supporters to “party like it’s 1933” after Trump was elected the first time.

An array of college administrators across the country shot down the idea citing a “slippery slope”, academic freedom and whatnot.

Any one of those administrators who now fails to speak out against the revocation of Columbia grads’ diplomas for protesting on campus should lose their jobs and become permanently unemployable. They clearly don’t actually care about antisemitism or academic freedom and they aren’t at all concerned about a slippery slope. They just care about their careers and sucking up to whoever’s got more power than they do.

"The obvious reason the #Trump administration is making an example of #Columbia is the #GazaProtests of last spring, which began on Morningside Heights and spread at warp speed around the nation. But the government is also using its anti-Palestinian crackdown as an excuse to fulfill another one of its cherished goals: to crush the influence of prestigious universities."
