My life likely turned out as well as it has so far because my parents fled Fremont, California, due to the terrible public schools following the passage of Prop 13—well, in fact, before the passage of Prop 13 the schools were pretty terrible. But they were going to be far, far worse afterwards. Fremont changed a lot since welived there! I don’t know how they got the funding back toproduce good schools. nytimes.com/2024/03/29/busines

They moved from Canada to Fremont, Calif., 40 miles southeast of San Francisco, when Mr. Tan was in fifth grade, and he later became an American citizen. Mr. Tan said Fremont's excellent public schools had changed his life, pushing him to take accelerated math classes and learn to code by seventh grade. By age 14, he was writing code for a company that made city websites. He graduated from Stanford in 2003.
